Interagency discrepancies in tropical cyclone intensity estimates over the western North Pacific in recent years

Abstract This study investigates interagency discrepancies among best‐track estimates of tropical cyclone (TC) intensity in the western North Pacific, provided by Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), China Meteorological Administration (CMA), and Regional Specialized (RSMC) Tokyo during 2013 to 2019. The results reveal evident differences maximum wind speed (MSW) estimates, where linear systematic are significant. However, Dvorak parameter (CI) numbers derived from MSWs reported three agencies internally consistent. Further analysis suggests that remained CI related estimation trends, initial intensities, TC positions these datasets. In addition, JTWC for TCs over open ocean generally higher than those CMA RSMC. RSMC tend give intensities mainland coastal areas Japan, respectively, with same dataset. pattern potentially reflects extensive use surface observations two landfalling offshore TCs. These may help research community get more accurate details about WNP best track datasets different agencies.
